Repressurising a Vaillant boiler

How to Repressurise Vaillant Boiler Pressure & Decrease

Last updated on January 4th, 2025

When your pressure drops too low, the boiler will stop working, which means no heating or hot water. The pressure should be between 1 and 1.5 bar when the radiators are cold. I have been repairing and servicing boilers for over a decade and have fixed many boiler pressure problems.

Vaillant boiler pressure explained

Vaillant boilers have a safety device called a pressure relief valve (PRV). If the pressure reaches 3 bar the PRV will open and the water will be let out as a safety precaution, the pressure gauge will drop to zero.

If your pressure is under 1 bar, you should increase it. If it’s over 1.5 bar when the heating is off and the radiators are cold, you should reduce it. The boiler pressure can rise to over 2 bar when the heating is on. This is perfectly normal as the heat expands the water inside the radiators when the heating is turned on.

How to check the pressure

Checking the pressure on a Vaillant boiler can be frustrating. Unlike most boilers, Vaillant uses a digital display for pressure readings, which requires pressing multiple buttons under the screen, it varies depending on the model.

While Vaillant boilers also have manual pressure gauges, they’re unhelpful as they lack numbers, relying instead on a vague grey zone to indicate safe pressure. The difference between the top and bottom of this zone is huge!

The digital display can be tricky, too, it doesn’t always stay on long enough, so you may find yourself repeatedly pressing buttons to check the reading, especially when repairing or working on the system.

Boiler pressure too low

Low pressure is very common and can cause your boiler to stop working. If your Vaillant boiler pressure becomes too low you may get the F22 error which means you need to repressurise it. If the pressure drops below 1 bar you should increase it.

How to increase the pressure:

  1. Open one valve fully (only if there are two valves)
  2. Open the other valve slowly until you can hear the water
  3. When the pressure has reached 1 to 1.5 bar close both valves
  4. Reset the boiler (if needed)
  5. Turn the heating on

Do not open both filling loop valves fully straight away as the water pressure in the house might be too much for the boiler and cause the pressure to shoot up too high.

Vaillant filling loops

A filling loop is built-in on the bottom of modern combi boilers, but it could also be on the pipework. Usually below the boiler or in the hot water cylinder cupboard if you have one, but an external flexible filling loop could be anywhere on the system.

There could be one of these filling loops under your Vaillant boiler:

How often should you need to repressurise a boiler?

You shouldn’t need to repressurise your boiler at all. A pressurised heating system is sealed so if you need to increase the pressure regularly then the water is getting out. If you have to repressurise once or twice a year I wouldn’t worry about it.

Boiler pressure too high

There are many reasons for a boiler’s pressure to be too high. If the pressure reaches 3 bar the PRV will let the water out. So, if your pressure is above 1.5 bar when the heating is and the radiators are cold, you should reduce it. To reduce the pressure you must let some water (or air) out of the heating system.

How to reduce boiler pressure:

  • Bleed a radiator
  • Open a drain off valve
  • Open the pressure relief valve
  • Crack a nut
  • Magnetic filter

The first thing you should do to reduce the pressure is bleed the air out of every radiator. There might not be any but if there is, removing it will drop the pressure. Bleeding water out of one radiator is the easiest way to reduce boiler pressure but also the slowest.

Boiler keeps losing pressure

A boiler that keeps losing pressure means there’s a problem that needs to be fixed.

Most common reasons:

  • A Leak on the central heating system
  • The expansion vessel has lost its air
  • Pressure relief valve passing water
  • Filling loop open

You should check if the pressure is rising to 3 bar when the heating is on to narrow down the problem. If the pressure is dropping to zero without rising too high first, you most likely have a leak somewhere on the system.

Summary

If your boiler pressure is too low or too high, fixing it is important. Repressurising a Vaillant boiler is an easy job. It can save you from paying a plumber to do an easy task.

If you have to keep repressurising your boiler, you should get that problem found and fixed as soon as possible.

My valiant boiler often seems to lose pressure more often lately ,by that I seem to be re pressurising the boiler about half dozen times a year, my home is wet underfloor heating, no evidence other than the loss of pressure in that no signs of a water leak? I have been re pressurising the system as required and boiler starts up ok.
Due a yearly boiler check this week is there anything I can ask the engineer to check that might identify the pressure loss?
    Thanks in advance.

    I have Valiant combi ecoTech
I noticed boiler was closing down often.
I thought pressure is low so I represurised by using water loop underneath the boiler.

Switched on and it showed high
    Pressure over 3 bar.
    I tried bleeding radiators .
Pressure have come down but not enough.
I am waiting for boiler and radiators
to cool down and replied again.

As a lay person I don’t know what else I can do to fix this problem.

      1. Hi my pressure gauge is in the red but comes down when I let water out of radiators but later on goes up again to 3 is it the boiler

          Hi Denise,
It sounds like the filling loop is not closed fully causing the pressure to keep rising. If the pressure only goes up when the heating is on it’ll be because the expansion vessel needs to be recharged or possibly replaced.

  3. I currently have heating but no hot water. Pressure gauge is showing at zero. I have tried following your guide to repressurise my boiler. When opening both valves, there was no change to the gauge at all.
    Any help would be appreciated

  4. Hi, is a heat only boiler for central heating or does it heat the water as well.

    1. Steven Reid

Hi Andy, a heat only boiler heats the hot water cylinder as well as the central heating.
